Wisconsin’s Safe Sitter

safe-sitter-logoSafe Sitter is a medically accurate, highly structured babysitting preparation course designed for young adolescents 11 to 16 yrs old.

Safe Sitters are not just highly-qualified babysitters; they’re young business owners with practical life and safety skills-many already with an eye toward future endeavors!

Students will focus on:

  • Care of Choking Infant/Child
  • Infant and Child CPR
  • Injury Prevention and Injury Management
  • Safety for the Sitter
  • Child Care Essentials
  • Behavior Management
  • Babysitting as a Business

The 6-1/2 hour class includes:

  • Hands-on manikin practice
  • Small-group interactive learning
  • Role-playing and games

Each participant must pass a written and practical exam, proving mastery of key concepts and demonstrate acceptable skills in care of the choking infant/child. Students will receive a workbook and course completion card. There will be a break for lunch. Students are required to bring a non-refrigerated lunch. No peanuts please.

History

Safe Sitter was founded in 1980 by Indianapolis pediatrician, Dr. Patricia A. Keener, after a colleague’s 18-month-old choked to death while under an adult sitter’s care. Dr. Keener developed Safe Sitter as a medically accurate instructional program designed for young adolescents 11 to 14 years of age. Dr. Keener updates the curriculum regularly with the recent up in January 2016.
